The largest church in the world is the Basilica of Our Lady of Peace of Yamoussoukro in Côte d'Ivoire. It was completed in 1989 and covers an area of about 30,000 square meters (320,000 square feet), making it larger than St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican. The church was commissioned by the former president of Côte d'Ivoire, Félix Houphouët-Boigny, and took three years to build. The interior of the basilica can accommodate up to 18,000 worshippers, and the church is adorned with stained glass windows, marble columns, and a large dome. The Basilica of Our Lady of Peace of Yamoussoukro is considered a symbol of the wealth and power of the Côte d'Ivoire government.
